WHERE CAN I GO BUT TO THE LORD?
06th Apr 2022
One time in Nigeria I was greatly moved, and have never forgotten seeing a man kneeling at the front of the meeting singing words of a hymn which included these words, “Where can I go but to the Lord?”
He was invited to share his testimony of God’s help in a very difficult situation. He had been sent by his government to a very demanding diplomatic position, his wife couldn’t cope and returned home, he had been abandoned and was alone and yet the presence of God kept him safe and sustained him. There was no one to help and nowhere to go, except to the Lord, the faithful One who promises never to leave us or forsake us.
Psalm 77 paints a picture of a time when David is in anguish, perplexed at God’s seeming unresponsiveness to his prayers. He can’t sleep, he is so disturbed asking why God seems to be so inactive. However, using faith to recall the songs of praise he has sung in the past, remembering the miracles and deliverances he has personally seen, the help he has received, perhaps when he fought Goliath? Also, the time when God delivered the nation from Egypt and out of the clutches of Pharaoh? This causes him to see God’s greatness again.
Whenever we face circumstances where our God seems to be inactive and our prayers inadequate, it is good to do what David did. Look back, give thanks, actively remember and speak out the greatness of God, His kindness and action in your own life and all you have seen of His mighty acts. He will fulfil His promises, He is the ever faithful Almighty One, and we don’t understand His timing or His silence, but He will not fail us.
He cannot fail for He is God
He cannot fail, He’s pledged His Word
He cannot fail, He’ll see you through
He cannot fail, He’ll answer you.
