DELIGHT

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” This is a very well-known verse which set me thinking about the word “Delight”.
The biography of George Muller, written by Roger Steer, has the title “Delighted in God.” George was caring for hundreds of orphans, trusting God for all the resources needed for this task. He said that the first thing he did each day was to make his soul happy in the Lord.
The challenges he faced were immense, and it would have been easy to let these demands create fear and anxiety. So what did it mean to be “Delighted in God”? By turning his eyes from the problem to Jesus, George would see the greatness of God. As fear threatened to rise, he would hear the words of Jesus, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.” As he meditated on God’s word, he would remember that “Nothing is impossible with God.”
This is a great example and challenge for us today. How do you start your day? Have you let your circumstances become bigger than God’s power? Have you let the dangers of life become bigger than His protection? Have you let the worries of life become bigger than His peace?
I have been looking at other places where the word “delight” occurs. Psalm 112:1-2 says, “Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land…” Delighting in God not only blesses us, but it spills over to our children.
Psalm 119 contains many verses with the word “delight.” One of them is verse 24, “Your statutes are my delight; they are my counsellors.” Ask God for His wisdom as you face the challenges of life. (James 1:5)
In the past few days I have found myself singing the song, “I delight greatly in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in the robe of righteousness.” Based on Isaiah 61:10
