WALKING ON WATER
13th Jun 2018
There is something thrilling about the account of Jesus walking on the water and rescuing the disciples from their stormy crossing. Mark 14:27-32 includes Peter’s adventure, who as Jesus seeks to calm them blurts out, “Lord, if it is you tell me to come to you on the water.” I love the reply Jesus gave, “Come”. Peter walked on that word spoken by Jesus.
It continues, “Then Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith, why did you doubt.” And when they had climbed into the boat the wind died.”
Does not this incident vividly describe our battles of faith? We take hold of the word that God has given and begin to walk on water. We will have times when we feel we are sinking and in danger of drowning. It is at this point that Jesus reaches out and lifts us back up onto the water, so that we can continue our walk of faith back to the boat.
The walk of faith is not easy, but His word takes us on the only path that will bring deliverance and victory. The path of logic and reason will always fail. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “We walk by faith, not by sight.”
We have many friends and family going through times of trial and testing; we are praying and standing with them, but we know that it is a battle that is going to be won by faith. John writes in his first letter, “This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4)
Jesus didn’t carry Peter back to the boat, he lifted him back up to the surface so that he could resume his walk of faith. That’s what Jesus does for us, when we think we’re sinking, he lifts us up, speaks His word into our hearts, so that we can continue to walk into the place of deliverance.
