SING PRAISES
13th Nov 2024
Singing is a unique gift given to humans by God. None of the animal kingdom can sing in the way we can. There is bird song; but to be able to sing different tunes and add words is only given to mankind. God did this for a reason.
The Book of Psalms is the song book of the Bible, and we are constantly encouraged to use our voices to give praise and thanks to God. Psalm 105:1-2 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.”
A lady came to see us recently and in the course of conversation she said, “I never sing, I haven’t got a good voice and so don’t do it.” We found this very sad. You don’t need a good voice to be able to sing praise to God, you just need a praising heart.
Both Joyce and I sing. We do it when we are praying together, we also sing as we are doing other things. I sometimes will ask Joyce, “What did you just say?” Her reply is, “I wasn’t saying anything, I was just singing.” The songs we sing come from a repertoire stretching back many years, some golden oldies, some more recent songs!
Singing is a very important part of our lives, it is an element of our worship to God, but also many songs contain truths and things God is saying to us in our present situation. We just need to listen carefully to the song God has put in our heart.
When Jesus and the disciples had celebrated the Lord’s Supper together, in Matthew 26:30 it says, “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Many Bible scholars believe that the hymn they sung was Psalm 118. Read it. What a psalm to sing in preparation for all that was ahead of Jesus and the disciples.
Not only this, but God sings over us - Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
Let us rediscover the power of singing. Let your heart and your voice sing praises every day. Listen as God rejoices over you with singing.
