MILK OR MEAT
10th Jan 2024
Hebrews 5:11-14 is a very challenging passage, which speaks about believers being “dull of hearing”, the reason is that they have not left their “milk” diet and moved on to “strong meat.” These folk are being described and being “babes”, but it continues “But strong meat belongs to those who are of full age or mature.”
The subject for this week has been inspired by two things that have happened during the past few days. Firstly, we were with two of our adult grandchildren, who told us that they had embarked on a project to read the Bible in 31 days. In fact, the Bible is being read to them at an increased speed, and they follow in their own Bibles. It takes about 90 minutes per day and they will have read the whole Bible by the end of January.
What they realised is that they had a lot of Bible knowledge, but there were missing bits that they had never read. For example, how did the Israelites end up living in Egypt? The answer is that Joseph brought the whole family down during a time of famine.
The second conversation was with a friend who we have known for a long time, who is living in London, but is having difficulty finding a church with good Bible teaching. It seems that there is a glut of 20 minute motivational messages, but a lack of teaching from the Bible.
So my question to you is - what kind of diet are you on? As many of you know I have written two Bible Reading Plans and have made it a practice to read through the whole Bible every year.
Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom…”
Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture in God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
You may have no control over the quality of preaching in your Church, however, what you do in your own personal life is your decision. If you were told that your food for 2024 would be a glass of milk for every meal, how would you feel?
