UNTIL HE COMES
09th Oct 2013
When Paul gives us instructions about taking bread and wine, he reminds us that it is both an act of remembrance and a declaration of faith. “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26)
Recently a friend of ours was seated on a bus next to a lady and had a remarkable conversation - this is his quote from Facebook, “Once we had shared our faith in Jesus with each other she proceeded to give me an incredible summary of the New Testament's teaching on the second coming of Jesus. As we parted company she said that it was as if Jesus was in the wings waiting to take centre stage. I am still reeling from the whole encounter” Among the comments, a number of people suggested she might have been an angel! She might also have been a well taught believer who is living in the expectancy of Jesus’ second coming, looking forward to the day when He will indeed take centre stage.
I was left personally very challenged by reading this incident and had to ask myself, Am I looking forward to His glorious appearing? Do I pray “Maranatha” come Lord Jesus? Do I live with the urgency of what will happen when He comes? Do I have any excitement at the thought of His glory and splendour being on display for everyone to see?
It is very easy for this whole subject to be a matter of controversy and debate. How? when? and where? - only the Father knows. But we as believers can pray and live with the reality that it is going to happen.
Peter encourages us with this challenge, “Since everything..... (is going to happen just as God has said it will), what kind of of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day and speed it’s coming.” (2 Peter 3:11-12)
Let us live today as if “until He comes” is just about to happen!
