UNDER PRESSIURE?
06th Dec 2017
We have been to Nigeria on several occasions about this time of the year, leaving behind the Christmas hype and advertising that bombards us in the UK. We arrive in the capital Abuja and there is one ‘not too noticeable’ Christmas tree and no ‘Jingle Bells’. Further towards our destination there is nothing to be seen of the commercialisation of Christmas as we know it. It is refreshing and there is a real sense of relief.
We attend and take part in a large National Conference where the focus is on Jesus, His word and His ways. Ten days later it is back to the UK, where once again we are plunged into the pressure and stress surrounding the festive season.
Paul’s directive to believers in Rome was, “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould.” (Romans 12:2 JB Philips), and in Acts 2:40 Peter preaching on the Day of Pentecost commands, “Get yourself out of this sick and stupid culture.” (The Message)
So how do we obey these Scriptures? It’s back to individually asking for God’s directive and then choosing to celebrate Jesus in the way He instructs. He said of His disciples, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” We don’t have to indulge in all the trappings that are on offer. Our love for others is not demonstrated by how much their gift costs!
Be creative in your approach; celebrate, but be ruled by peace and thanksgiving, rather than trying to create the perfect Christmas show as prescribed by the media. Choosing to be alternative is a challenge - but it leaves you with a sense of God’s amazing love, and debt free, it will be worth it.
