IN TWO PLACES AT ONCE
15th May 2019
When life gets demanding, have you ever thought, “Hang on - I can’t be in two places at the same time.” I’m beginning to realise you can!
Jesus lived, walked and slept on planet earth, living a completely human life, in time and appearing no different from any other person. However, His spirit was in constant contact with His Father in heaven.
The Apostle John explains how his spirit was taken into heavenly places and he saw things which are recorded in the book of Revelation. We know his physical location was on Patmos, but in his writing he uses such terms as - “I heard” “I saw” “I turned around” whilst referring to a different world.
Jesus said in John 5:19-20, “I tell you the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees the Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. The Father loves the Son and shows him what he is doing.” Here Jesus was explaining that He was in two places at once - on earth and in heaven.
Elijah seems to have experience of this. In 1 Kings 17:1 he speaks of God, “before whom I stand” as he declares to Ahab what he is hearing and seeing in heaven.
Elisha is accredited to be passing military information to the King of Israel about the King of Aram’s whereabouts, 2 Kings 6:12 declares, “Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the King of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
I am referring to a walk of intimacy, which God both longs for and will always respond to, when His children reach out to Him. It is so possible to disregard the Spirit of God’s directions and to act according to past experience or rote, and then, where is the demonstration of God’s power?
Isn’t it time to come back to utter dependence on the Holy Spirit, not acting or speaking until we have heard what our Father thinks about a given situation? Jesus demonstrated this lifestyle, as did the early church, and although seldom seen in our generation, it is not only possible, but when it becomes a reality - miracles happen!
