David had been doing very well hiding among the Philistines to avoid being captured and killed by King Saul, he had even been given the town Ziklag for his family and troops. He had helped his protectors by winning a number of battles. Things were looking good, but with an encounter with Israel about to happen, there was fear he would change sides, so he was sent back home. However, upon reaching Ziklag he and his men discovered it had been ransacked, set on fire, and his wives, sons and daughters taken captive. What a tragedy when things had been going so well.
So what were they to do? 1 Samuel 30:4-6 tells us, “So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep…..David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter because of his sons and daughters.”
What could David do now? Verse 6 says, “But David found strength in the Lord his God.” That was the secret, go to God and allow Him to restore equilibrium, to pour in strength and to wipe the tears away. You may be able to identify with similar situations when everything seems hopeless, your whole world has crumbled and you don’t know where to turn.
Go to God and receive His strength and then you can take the next step as David did. David then instructs Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the ephod…and David inquired of the Lord.” What am I to do, I need wisdom from above? David received his answer, “Pursue, you will surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
God is faithful, He has given his promise to David. The job is not over yet, there is still a challenging task ahead, but the outcome is not in doubt. God has spoken and He will fulfil His word.
Does this sound familiar? Are you sitting in the middle of your Ziklag, weeping until you have no more strength to weep? Find your strength in God, hear His voice, and see him work His victory for you.
