THE POWER OF SONGS
20th Aug 2025
I’m so thankful for the way the Holy Spirit has inspired musicians to write words and music that somehow impact us, and can be recalled by the Holy Spirit, exactly when we need to be reminded of their content.
Last week, I was dealing with several difficult situations and found myself singing a very old chorus:
“When the road is rough and steep, fix your eyes upon Jesus,
He alone has power to keep, fix your eyes upon Him.
Jesus is a faithful friend, One on whom you can depend.
He is faithful to the end, fix your eyes upon Him.”
A few days later, I was singing a song written by Brian Doerksen
“Faithful One, so unchanging,
Ageless One, you are my rock of peace
Lord of all I depend on you,
I call out to you, again and again.
You are my rock in times of trouble
You lift me up when I fall down
All through the storm, Your love is the anchor, my hope is in You alone.”
On Sunday in Church, we were singing about the names of God, with a song including the words, “Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Simply singing out and being reminded of the character of God brings strength and hope. My Father, my anchor, the unchangeable One, who is consistent with His love, His promises, His very self, my Rock, my hiding place, my wisdom and everything I need.
Take courage today and sing His praise.
“Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me His praise shall sing.”
In the days of the Wesleys, Charles was the hymn writer who was able to put the truth and message into song, as there was much illiteracy and many people had no Bible. However, as they sang his hymns, they were being taught truth and strengthened in their faith.
It is incredible to me that, constantly, in my moment of need or joy, just the right song will come to mind, and as I sing it, it will give me exactly what is required.
Listen for God’s song for you today, and sing it! It will transform you and your situation.
