OVERFLOW
24th Oct 2018
Jesus declared that the things we say reveal what is in our hearts. In Luke 6:45 it says, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” There are times when we say something very spontaneously and realise that we have spoken hurtfully, and immediately try and recover the situation by saying, “I didn’t mean to say that, I am sorry.” The fact is your heart spoke before you had time to shut your mouth, or think of what you ought to say!
The way we live is the overflow of what is in our hearts, therefore we need to watch very carefully what goes inside us and what fills our hearts. When our hearts of full of love and gratitude, when we live in peace with God and others our hearts will overflow with blessing and grace. Jesus told the woman at the well in Samaria that the water He gave her would be a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from him.” (John 7:37-38) He was speaking about the Holy Spirit who was about to be poured out on the disciples on the day of Pentecost. We need to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit and our lives will overflow with songs and worshipping hearts. (See Ephesians 5:18-19)
1 John 4:19 says, “We love because he first loved us.” Our lives are the expression of what we receive in every aspect of life. When we know that we are loved by God and live in a loving relationship with those around us, love will be the overflow of our lives.
If we allow bitterness, disappointment, resentment and a general negativity about life to fill our hearts, that is what will overflow to others, it is not pretty and very damaging both to us and our acquaintances.
So today be filled with love, Living Water, the Holy Spirit, thankfulness, gratitude, forgiveness and joy and let everyone benefit from the overflow!
