LISTENING DAILY
26th Mar 2025
Proverbs 8:26 says, “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.” This came in my daily reading a few days ago and it set me thinking. Listening to God and hearing His voice is something we have been encouraging and teaching for a very long time.
However, listening to God’s voice, and doing what He says, can be two very different things. I was quite alarmed at the beginning of the year to look back to what God had said to me at the beginning of 2024, and discover that a project He had directed me to accomplish during the year had not even been started!
Also, the other day after I had been spending time with the Lord, Joyce said to me, “What has the Lord been saying to you today.” My answer was a bit vague and garbled. So when the verse quoted above came in my daily reading I was challenged to listen in a more focused and different way.
The words, “watching at my doors, waiting at my doorway” give listening to God a greater sense of urgency, and the responsibility for getting our instructions for each day; our marching orders!
There is a great temptation to look at the past, and even live in the past. We can retell stories of times past when we were involved in all sorts of inspiring things. But we are living in the now, and need to have our eyes looking ahead and not backwards.
Chris, one of the leaders of our church, was sharing on Sunday how he was hearing from God to expect a new move of the Spirit, and new time of revival. However, this was not to try and recreate past revivals or copy moves of God that happened long ago, but to reach out for a fresh outpouring of God’s power, and a new and fresh move of His Spirit.
I find this is provoking me to come daily into God’s presence with greater expectation and a fresh obedience to His instructions.
