HELP
10th Aug 2016
Whenever I hear Frank Sinatra’s song “I did it my way”, I feel incredibly sad and inside I find myself saying, “Yes you did, but did you really achieve anything worth bragging about?” Broken relationships, pain, anger, loneliness, all characterised this 20th century idol.
We were never designed to live in independence, but rather in relationship with God and our fellow human beings. The independent action of Adam and Eve led to the lies and pride that we know cut them off from God, and also cuts us off. Thank God for Jesus who sacrificed His life to restore relationship and bring us back to inter-dependancy with our Father, part of His original design for us.
King David personally knew what it was to depend on God’s resources and see success in all areas of life; he also saw in his predecessor Saul an example of extreme independence and its consequences. David rejoiced in God’s help, but like us, he could slip back into depending on himself and wrong thinking, with devastating consequences. The Bible gives us these examples to teach us and warn us, so we can avoid the same mistakes.
Our Father God wants to “help” us, but not control us; He gives us choice as to whether we seek His help and wisdom, or do it “our way”. His way is characterised by peace, protection, purpose and resources whatever terrain life leads us through. He is our Rock, a very present help in times of trouble, we will not fear for He is with us.
Check you independence levels today. Is God really your help? Or are you self-reliant?
2 Thessalonians 2:16 says, “May Jesus himself and God our Father, who reached out in love and surprised you with gifts of unending help and confidence, put a fresh heart in you, invigorate your work, enliven your speech.”
