HEAVENLY NOURISHMENT
08th Nov 2023
I love reading the encounter Jesus had with the woman at the well at Sychar, recorded in John 4. The perfect example of how we should share our faith with those who have yet to come to faith.
What struck me as I read this chapter a few days ago was the way Jesus spoke about the availability of supernatural nourishment. The story centre’s around water and Jesus asking this disreputable woman to give Him a drink from the well. She is shocked by the request and that Jesus would even speak to her a Samaritan woman.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” Thus began this life transforming conversation. However, this living water is available to all believers. Are you drinking from the “spring of water”?
In John 7:37 Jesus is addressing the crowds at the Feast, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from him.” So where are you going to slake your thirst? Are you seeking to be filled every day with the living water of the Holy Spirit? Natural water, though vital to health is limited - we need living water.
In John 4, the disciples have gone to the village for food and when they return to the well they are shocked at what they see, but then offer Jesus some of the food they have purchased. His reply is even more surprising, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” He then continues, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
There is an important principle here, we as believers need to make sure that daily we drink at the fountain of living water, seek a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit. We also need nourishment from God’s Word on a daily basis, this will give us supernatural strength for our day’s tasks.
I well remember flying back from the States to a weekend of ministry and wondering how I would cope. Would jet-lag get the better of me? But, as I reached out for this heavenly nourishment, I received all the strength I needed and was surprised at the energy and vitality I experienced.
You have access to supernatural resources - don’t neglect them.
