GOD'S WORD WORKS

The Word of God, the Bible, is the foundation of our lives; it serves as the handbook for living and the promise and hope for our future. Are we applying it to our daily lives? Do we see it as the rock upon which we stand?
Often, the motto on a coat of arms is based on scripture. In Clevedon, which is our local town, gig boat racing is very popular. A new boat was being acquired, and the townsfolk were asked for suggestions for a name. We already knew that the town motto was “Watch and Pray”, so the believers in town managed to win the vote and name the boat! This caused quite a stir, and some were not pleased.
I am concerned to hear preaching that is not grounded in scripture. Many preachers hold a wide range of concepts and ideas, but lack a firm foundation in the Word of God. Martin Luther was asked about his preaching philosophy, and he said, “I just threw the Bible into the congregation and the Word did the work.” He is later quoted as saying, “I have done nothing; the Word has done and accomplished everything.”
My mother was in the local corner shop many years ago, and a lively discussion arose, into which my mother, usually rather timid, boldly quoted a verse from the Bible, much to the surprise of the people listening. When she was recounting the story later, she said, “They all looked surprised and did not quite know what to make of my contribution. However, the Word is the Sword of the Spirit, and it will cut through human argument.”
Hebrews 4:12 states, “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Bible is our handbook for living, as it says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work.”
There is a powerful testimony from a survivor of the Tenerife Air Disaster, which we will share in the video. Just before the flight, his mother prayed Isaiah 43:2 over him, which includes, “When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, the flames will not set you ablaze.” And as he was trying to escape, he repeatedly shouted, “I am standing on Your Word!” He was one of the few survivors!
