GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY

It’s been interesting to read the book of Ecclesiastes, which has been part of my daily reading, during the time of the E U Referendum. The writer, probably Solomon, is reflecting on life with all its futility and pointlessness. He describes life in these words, “everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind, nothing was gained under the sun.” After speaking about work and leisure, a time for this and a time for that, he concludes the book with two instructions, “Fear God. Do what he tells you.”
Eugene Peterson in his overview of the book says this, “The author’s cool skepticism, a refreshing negation to the lush and seductive suggestions swirling around us, promising everything but delivering nothing, clears the air. And once the air is cleared, we are ready for reality - for God.”
One ex-politician on a news programme said, “God help Britain.” And He will. God not only has purpose for each individual life, but also for nations. Proverbs 16:13 in The Message says, “Make your motions, cast your votes, but God has the final say.”
So let us believers pray for our nation and for those who rule over us. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 in The Message says, “Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Saviour God wants us to live.”
Pray for a visitation of God’s Spirit and a corporate desire to know God, and be restored to being a nation who acknowledges our Christian heritage and lives in the reality of it.
