EVERYDAY HUMAN CONCERNS
11th Jan 2017
We are probably all familiar with the verse, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) As I read this a few days ago in the Message, I was struck by the way “all these things will be added to you” is translated as “your everyday human concerns will be met”. This is more specific and comprehensive and is so relevant to daily life.
It is so easy to think that we can handle the little things of life, but only bring the moments of crisis and the extreme difficulty to God. This is a great mistake, because Jesus wants to walk alongside us in every part of our lives. I found an old song coming to mind as I was thinking about this scripture.
Moment by moment I’m kept in His love,
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.
There are many verses that encourage us to bring every moment of every day to God in prayer. Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you.” Paul instructs his young disciple Timothy, “God has not given you a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
I am also reminded of the conversation Jesus had on the Emmaus Road, as the two disciples felt the bottom had dropped out of their world. Pouring out all their troubles and concerns to Jesus and listening to his calm and faith filled reply, caused them to say as they were telling the other disciples, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened up the scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32)
As you place Jesus at the centre of your day, as you talk to him and receive from him, you will find, “each day’s concerns will be met.”
