DELIGHT!
14th Aug 2013
Every time I read Psalm 40 and get to verse 8, one of the very early Worship Songs starts running through my mind, and I can’t stop singing it and thinking about the words:
I delight to do Thy will O Lord,
I delight to do Thy will,
And to walk with Thee is not grievous unto me,
For I delight to do Thy will.
Delight is a wonderful word, it expresses such joy and freedom. We use that word when we are enjoying life to the full, surrounded by the people we love, and just doing what we find most pleasurable.
So the challenge is, “Can we identify with the writer of the Psalm who is delighting to do God’s will?” We should do, because when we are living in obedience and harmony with Him, we are in the best possible place we could be. God’s ways are the most fulfilling, He wants our lives to be filled with joy and blessing, and even in times of difficulty, He wants to show us the way forward.
Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” That is a great promise to us all, and should stimulate us to set our hearts to delight in God more than perhaps we are doing at the moment!
When we delight in someone, our friendship grows and we enjoy their company more and more. The amazing fact is that before we have started delighting in God, he has already been delighting in us. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you... He will take great delight in you.”
Another song comes strongly to mind as I write this:
I delight greatly in the Lord,
My soul rejoices in my God.
For He has clothed me with garments of salvation
And arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.
So today let’s “Delight!”
