COMMITMENT
19th Apr 2023
2 Chronicles 16:9 says, “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”
It is a wonderful thing to watch commitment in the lives of those we know and appreciate. To begin with we are first and foremost those who receive commitment from God, through salvation in Jesus, who said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit - fruit that will last.” His commitment is strong and steadfast, He will never let us down and is always on our side.
He calls us to be committed people. We have just been to a family wedding where our grandson Reuben has married Maha, his beautiful wife. It was a wonderful occasion and the culmination of a love and friendship that has seen a developing commitment. We have watched Reuben’s commitment to God grow and become the very centre of his life. We have watched as he and Maha have become strong in their commitment to God and to each other.
Yet, on the day of their wedding a man whose commitment to God and the vision given to him, George Verwer, was being promoted to heaven. George founded Operation Mobilisation and has been committed to spreading the gospel worldwide from for more than 60 years. His passion for the gospel and his love and care for others is legendary. We count him as a friend who maintained personal contact over the years, when we would reckon he had more important things to do. He could truly echo the words of Paul who testified, “I have not been disobedient to the vision from heaven.” (Acts 26:19)
So the challenge for us today is, What is the level our our commitment? Have we lost our vision? Are we neglecting people who we should be caring for? Have our lives lost focus and have become vague and purposeless?
Let us recommit ourselves to the directive from Jesus, who declared, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness…..” (Matthew 6:33)
