BURDENS
03rd Apr 2013
During the past couple of weeks we have become aware of so many situations in the lives our friends that are very challenging and difficult. There have been life threatening diseases, sudden deaths, family crises and housing issues. As we have been upholding our friends in prayer, standing with them in faith and ministering God’s love and comfort, we could so easily let the burden become almost overwhelming.
I was thinking and praying about these issues and remembered the verse in Psalm 55:22 (NASB) where it says, “Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” This verse immediately strengthened me and lifted my faith.
In Galatians 6:2 it says, “Carry each others burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.” It is so important that we pray in faith for those who are going through immense challenges. Many who are undergoing medical treatments, and having to deal with the weakening effect of the drugs they are taking, need their friends to be alongside sharing the load.
Paul encouraged the Philippian believers, as he told them, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will keep your hearts in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) I once heard someone say the if you are to receive the “peace that transcends understanding” you will have to give up your rights to “understanding.”
There can be so many why’s and what if’s in these stressful times, and there are not too many answers. However, when we fix our eyes on Jesus, the burdens are lifted and the peace descends.
Again, as I was thinking and praying for my friends, some more words from a hymn came to mind:
Cast your care on Jesus today,
Leave your worry and fear.
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
